14TH RUSSIAN LEGAL FORUM HELD WITH THE SUPPORT OF RUSTAM KURMAEV & PARTNERS

Rustam Kurmaev & Partners sponsored the 14th Annual Russian Legal Forum. The event hosted by Vedomosti was held on April 12-13, 2018 at the Marriott Royal Aurora Moscow.

This year, leading legal experts discussed large-scale reform of the Russian judicial system and judicial processes, changes to anti-monopoly legislation, monitoring and regulation of the legal services market, corporate law, and M&A. Separate panels were held to focus of continued education and improvement of lawyers’ skills.

In one of the key sessions of the forum, experts discussed recent landmark court cases. Rustam Kurmaev, the firm’s managing partner, delivered a speech on the Impact of Preliminary Investigation Findings on Commercial Disputes Resolution as Illustrated by 2017’s Landmark Court Cases. During his presentation, Kurmaev touched on a few important court cases handled by his firm in 2017, including the recovery of USD 7 million in damages from Russian fiscal authorities (case No. А40-119490/2015), recovery of RUB 12.5 billion from MECHEL Group (case No. А53-4/2017), and recovery of insurance proceeds of RUB 544 million from Ingosstrakh ONDD (case No. А40-179178/2016).

Another partner of Rustam Kurmaev & Partners, Dmitry Gorbunov, took part in the most high-profile (according to the participants) session held on the forum’s last day, entitled Interpretation of the Law in White Collar Crimes. In his presentation, Dmitry spoke about “live” dispositions of the Russian Criminal Code as interpreted by the Russian Central Bank and the Federal Antimonopoly Service, a topic which is especially relevant in light of recently announced legislative initiatives. Other topics discussed at the session included criminal law risks for business, new powers for prosecution, and issues of criminal liability of top managers and beneficiaries.
